If you skip breakfast to save calories or because you aren’t a “morning person” or you “don’t have time” - think again.
Research now shows that eating a big breakfast actually aids in weight loss. It is quite common for those on crash diets to skip breakfast or substitute it with coffee or tea to speed up weight loss.
We’ve always known that people who don’t eat enough early in the day set themselves up for overeating later. But researchers now say that a breakfast laden with lean protein actually helps reduce cravings for more food during the rest of the day, thus in effect stopping food binges.
The study compared two groups of obese subjects — one on high-calorie breakfasts and the other on low-calorie ones. Initially the low-calorie breakfast eaters fared better, but after a period of eight months, the higher calorie breakfast eaters lost more weight.
The doctors explain that when you wake up in the morning, your metabolism is high and levels of cortisol and adrenaline are at their highest. Your brain needs instant energy. When you eat later, the body and brain are still in high-alert mode, so the body saves energy from the food as fat.
Here’s the catch:
The level of the chemical serotonin, which regulates the sensation of hunger, is highest in the morning, which means your cravings are lowest and you may not feel like eating. As the day goes on, the serotonin level drops and you get hungrier and are more prone to cravings.
Finally, here is one more reason to avoid that crash diet. A study by Glasgow University has found binge eating and crash dieting may significantly reduce life expectancy.
We don’t tend to think about long term consequences, but I just want to plant that seed.
Stop dieting . . . lose weight . . . live longer.
Sounds good to me!
